There are staircases and then there are Staircases. The Palais Garnier’s Grand Escalier is definitely the latter, and climbing its steps is an unforgettable experience.
Paris’ Opera is one of the most photographed buildings from the outside, but I find the inside even more breath-taking. From the majestic double staircase with its thirty-metre-high vault to the lavish foyer with countless chandeliers and incredible auditorium, every little nook of the Palais Garnier is worth remembering.
Whether you visit the opera while attending a ballet or simply for a tour, don’t forget to look up once you’re in the auditorium. The building was built in the late 19th century, but the ceiling of the theatre was re-painted by Marc Chagall in the 60s, leaving a bold and colourful artwork that makes this place absolutely unique.
