The vast, untouched horizontal landscape is the greatest draw of Hokkaido’s most magnificent natural attraction, Kushiro Marsh.

It is also a valuable habitat for many flora and fauna, including the red-crowned crane, revered by the Ainu people as the god of the marsh. Designated as a National Special Natural Monument, they are a favourite of ours and spectacular to watch, especially during breeding season!

The marsh is shaped such that at its deepest point, it is approximately 40km inland from the Pacific Ocean coastline, although this vast area of land was actually part of the ocean in ancient times.

Highly recommended for a day out with friends, or for adventurous couples looking for a great view!

Many companies work together to show you the best of the marsh. At the Onnenai Visitor Center, you can walk out into the middle of the marshland for that Instagram-worthy shot!

Travel into the marshland by canoe with Kushiro Marsh & River. If you are lucky, you might see some Ezo deer and other animals.

Come together to watch the cranes in winter! Breathtaking indeed.
