Singapore’s iconic mosque is a sight fit for a king. Fitting, as it was built in 1824 for Singapore’s first sultan, the Sultan Hussein Shah.

Every time I’m in the Kampong Glam area — historically the enclave of the Malay community in Singapore — I have to make a pitstop at this massive mosque, with beautiful architecture in shimmering gold.

Take a close look at the sparkling onion-shaped domes and you’ll realise they’re not as simple as they appear. In fact, each of the dome bases are plastered with glass bottle ends, which were donated by lower-income Muslims as a contribution during construction.

Come during Ramadan (the Muslim fasting period which varies year to year) to enjoy the surrounding night markets and food stalls!

The Sultan Mosque is a must-visit as you explore the buzzing Kampong Glam neighbourhood of boutiques and Middle-Eastern eateries.
