The local cha chaan teng (tea restaurant) is a HK institution, but often they are places of tired interiors, mediocre food and terrible service.

That said, Cheung Hing is not your typical cha chaan teng. It is well off the tourist map; almost all diners are local residents as it is located in a residential suburb. The interior is sharp and nostalgic, and the service is as friendly as it gets in this type of eatery.

The food is also on point. The polo bun (pineapple bun – so-named for its sweet, crunchy top that bears a resemblance to the fruit) here is a must-try, as they do many variations of it.

Cheung Hing is not as gritty as other cha chaan tengs. It has had a fresh coat of paint, and the service is of a much higher standard than other places. This is where the locals eat – come visit for an authentic local dining experience.

A typical Hong Kong breakfast/afternoon set.

The polo bun here is a must-try. They do many variations of this classic Hong Kong snack – with fillings such as luncheon meat and egg (pictured), satay beef or peanut butter.

Enjoy breakfast with the local daily or your choice of literature, and watch the world pass by as the locals begin their morning.
