Friðheimar is a beautiful restaurant set in a large greenhouse that grows tomatoes all year around. It’s really the perfect getaway in Iceland’s cold, long winters. We love going there on cold days to sit in this little oasis with a hot cup of tomato soup.

They use geothermal energy (boiling water just beneath the surface of the ground) to power their greenhouses, which is how they are able to grow tomatoes all year round. Visitors are welcome to tour the greenhouses and learn about this ground-breaking agricultural technique, whilst tasting the fresh produce available.

It’s a great little spot, and only an hour away from Reykjavík. It’s in south Iceland, which means it is surrounded by an array of popular sites such as Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss.

We recommend the tomato soup, so yummy with freshly cut basil.

The staff here are so nice and informative.

Remember to call ahead to make a reservation – it’s a popular place.
