Local Hong Kongers love to eat, you can’t help but notice the abundance of restaurants and eateries around this city. While wandering the busy streets, you will notice many street side stalls often packed with people chatting and enjoying local snacks. Let me share with you four of the most iconic local snacks in Hong Kong that you must try.

The famous HK Eggettes: Readily available at street side stalls, this waffle that visually resembles chicken eggs is soft and gooey on the inside, and light and crispy on the outside. The best in town is Mammy Eggettes – it has a perfectly balanced texture inside and out, and they also take a modern approach with their recipes. I recommend the matcha and red bean.

Curry Fish Balls: A typical local snack that is readily available at all street side stalls. Cheap and delicious – a must-try in Hong Kong. Tip: You can combine the fish balls and siu mai (fish meat dumpling) to mix things up a little.

Pan-fried Stuffed Treasures: Fish paste stuffed into vegetables such as eggplant, capsicum, chilis, and even tofu. They have evolved over the years to become a popular and long-standing street side snack, usually skewered to allow you to eat the snack right there in the street. Remember to enjoy them with soy sauce and chili sauce.

Tofu Pudding: A silky pudding made from soy beans, this dessert is usually served hot or cold with brown sugar or syrup. For a bit of nostalgia, visit Kung Wo Dou Bun Chong in the working class area of Sham Shui Po. They have been operating since 1958, and not much has changed there. It’s a real hidden gem.
Tip: Try tofu pudding with ginger syrup if you want a bit of a spicy kick. It’s also good if you are under the weather.
