Located approximately two hours by car from Yogyakarta city, Goa Pindul is a cave formed by karst with an underground river. Legend has it that the servants of Panembahan Senopati were ordered to get rid of his unwanted grandson. Before they left the baby, they washed him in a stream inside this cave, where his cheek accidentally hit a stone and created a bump on it. The cave’s name was derived from Pindul or pipi kebendul in Javanese language, which means ‘the bumped cheek’.

You don’t have to worry as your cheek won’t get bumped here. The length of the cave is 350 metres with a width of up to 5 metres and the distance to the cave roof is 4 metres. To go inside, we must ride an inner tire tube because the water is 5-12 metres deep – that is why it is called “cave tubing”. The operator will provide a guide who will drag your tire so all you have to do just sit and enjoy the ride. But before that, you must put on a life vest and helmet for safety purposes.

While tubing in cold emerald-green water, the guide will explain the stories and ornaments, such as stalactites, stalagmites, and crystal stones. Sometimes you can see bats hanging on the roof or you cannot see anything at all. It’s magical! The journey takes about an hour. At the end of the cave, we can swim around or jump from the cliff.

My suggestion is, avoid coming on weekends or public holidays. It will not be nice to be in the dark with so many people, right?
