Take in one of Hokkaido's best views from 90 metres above from the Goryokaku Tower! Do you know that it was here that one of the very last battles between the Shogunate and the newly formed Meiji government was fought?

Later, it was turned into a public park where over one thousand cherry blossom trees were planted. That’s why it’s one of Japan’s top cherry blossom spots! It’s perfect for couples to enjoy a quiet time together, and can be even more beautiful in winter than spring.

I got online early and booked a romantic experience for my husband and I. During Golden Week, you can reserve your very own private spot underneath the Cherry Blossom trees! The staff do all the setting up and cleaning up. My husband was so surprised.

Aerial view of the park.

‘Hanami’, which means ‘flower viewing’, is a favourite pastime for the Japanese. Come with friends, a partner or even co-workers and enjoy a picnic or even a BBQ under a sea of pink.

If you're feeling a little adventurous, you can enjoy a boat ride around the citadel. But we must warn you that it can take a long time to finish a lap!

At night you can take a stroll around Yozakura, which offers a wonderful night viewing experience, or explore the small shops and markets there.
