For those who travel for food, Ipoh will always hit the spot. The town brims with dining options, from old-fashioned hawker centres to the mushrooming hipster cafes. So how do you choose a place to eat with such an overwhelming selection? You go to where the locals gather, of course.

One popular place is Restoran Vegas, a food court-style eatery that plays host to a variety of vendors dishing up local flavours that have been around for more than 40 years.

I absolutely recommend trying the rojak from the Hometown Rojak stall, an addictive fruit salad drizzled with a Borneo-meets-Ipoh savoury sauce. Each crunchy bite promises a mighty punch of flavours that are equally sweet and spicy.

For a more filling meal, grab the wok-fried Cantonese beef kuey teow from the Pak Lai stall. You can immediately tell that this dish has been perfected over generations. The charred smoky wok hei taste along with generous portions of prawns and silky noodles really make this delicious dish one you’ll never forget. Then, wash it all down with the town’s signature white coffee which is perfect both hot or cold.

The best time to visit Restoran Vegas is in the evening for an early dinner as the stalls are less busy during this period. There is also ample parking in this area, so visitors won’t have to worry about having a hard time trying to secure one.
