Balik Pulau sits on a side of Penang that has been left untouched, for now. It is drastically different from George Town, and the pace of life is obviously slower.

I recommend renting a bicycle as the best way to explore the area. For a leisurely ride, it is best to allocate about half a day. I like the vast greenery around every corner, and discovering interesting sights along the way; from paddy fields, plantations, to kampungs.

Balik Pulau gives visitors a chance to experience a simpler life, where traditional trade is still common among the locals here. This is where I go when I need to disconnect and enjoy the tranquillity this place has to offer.

Many kampung houses can still be found in the Balik Pulau area, although you can spot some abandoned ones as families have moved to the town area.

There is still a strong fishing trade in Balik Pulau, and they contribute significantly to the seafood industry in Penang.

Something you will not see in George Town – picturesque paddy fields!

If you are observant enough, you may also spot livestock that roam the area.
