Before jeepneys, Kalesas (or horse-drawn calashes) were used as the main mode of transportation. Back then, they were used by high-ranking officials in the Spanish era.

Today, you can hire one driven by local cocheros (coachmen) to enjoy a different way of exploring Manila’s streets and historical spot. They usually charge 350 pesos for 30 minutes.

They are usually found around famous tourist attractions like the National Museum, Rizal Park, and Roxas Boulevard. They might even be hanging around inside and outside the Intramuros.

You can see a Kalesa at almost every corner of Manila.

Hiring a Kalesa to explore Binondo is also a good idea.

Some locals still use Kalesas as a mode of transportation.

I wasn’t kidding when I said there are Kalesas everywhere.
