If you are seeking reliable local Southern Thai food in Phuket, this is the place. Kan Eang is a famous restaurant operated by a local family with almost 50 years of experience. Now, there are two branches, both of which are located near Chalong Pier.

With great locations, both branches of the restaurant allow visitors to enjoy both delicious food and a nice view of Chalong Bay. The atmosphere is great, especially in the evening time. For weekends, it is recommended to book in advance as there are many customers from Phuket and also from other parts of Thailand.

Recommended dishes are ‘Mee Hoon Kang Puu and Buer Tod’. Kang Puu is crab meat curry with coconut. It is quite spicy because it is an authentic Southern Thai dish. Local people eat it with rice noodles (rice vermicelli) and vegetables. Buer Tod is batter-fried freshwater weeds with shrimps. It is made from freshwater weed called ‘Yaa Chong’ in Thai. Buer Tod is quite special, unique and very local. I recommend trying it with the special local sauce too.

If you have half a day, you can enjoy an afternoon speedboat ride to Koh Hey, a beautiful island located about 15 minutes from the restaurant, and come back just in time for dinner. You can enjoy special offers on the ride as the speedboat is operated by the restaurant owner.

Tip: For dinner, arrive at the restaurant early to enjoy the sunlight. On a clear day, choose to sit in the open-air area to feel the sea breeze.
