Iceland boasts of many beautiful churches, but this one is a personal favourite – so much so we got married there in 2012!

Hallgrímskirkja was once the tallest building in Iceland with its 74.5m high tower, and is still the largest church in Iceland.

It took 41 years to build it, and today the church is both a par-ish church and a national sanctuary in Iceland. The design of the church is truly unique and is said to represent the basalt rock columns that can be found along some of the beaches here.

Visible from almost any point in the city, Hallgrimskirkja Church towers at the top of Skolavordustigur Street, the central art and design shopping street in the capital.

It’s one of Reykjavík’s best-known landmarks and is one of the most-visited places by tourists in Iceland. The church is located in the heart of the city, and boasts an amazing, sweeping view of the capital from the tower.

The magnificent pipe organ is 15 metres tall and weighs 25 metric tons.

Visitors can light a candle that represents their prayer request to God.
