Hin Ta and Hin Ya are proof that grandparents are the solid foundation of every family

At the southern end of Lamai Beach on Koh Samui, you will find some 'interesting' rock formations called Hin Ta and Hin Yai (or Grandpa and Grandma). While they often elicit giggles for looking like male and female genitalia, there is a sadder story behind their origin. 

 

Legend has it that a couple were sailing to a neighbouring province on behalf of their son to ask for a woman's hand in marriage. Their boat was seized by a storm, and the couple died at sea. They then turned into rocks as proof of their sincerity and true intentions to the would-be bride's parents.

 

You can see the natural phenomenon of the granite rocks that have been eroded by the sea and wind. If you visit in the late afternoon or evening, you might be in time to catch the setting sun reflecting off the clear waters and rock formations. 

 

There is a large flat rock that you can step on to get closer to the rock formations. It is also the perfect spot to get a shot with the turquoise waters glistening in the background.
