Next to the Gran Teatre del Liceu (or Grand Theatre of the Lyceum) is Opera Samfaina, an innovative restaurant founded by Tast Barcelona in July 2016 with the objective of promoting the Catalan culture through gastronomy in a very innovative and unexpected format.

Once you step in, you will be ‘brought’ to another world after going through a velvet curtain. You will be surprised by visual effects, dioramas and scenes that makes you feel like you are entering a bewitched forest, which is followed by an ‘under the sea’ experience.

The spaces are divided in different thematic areas: The Vermouth Bar, Diva, Odyssey and the Market. Food is served on round tables with visual projections while the waiter explains each dish.

This fantasy world was designed by the visual artist Franc Aleu, who transformed dinners into a full sensorial and funny experience. The tapas and dishes offered present the traditional side of Catalan cuisine and were specially created Michelin-starred chefs such as Jordi Roca and his brothers, as well as Albert Adrià (brother of Ferran Adrià).

You can enjoy anytime in their bar the most genuine selection of local wines, beers and vermouth accompanied by traditional tapas, and the best bit is – no reservations required.

I personally tried the Diva Menu – it’s affordable at 38€ and satisfactory for a selection of 8 different tapas and 2 drinks. I absolutely loved the visual presentation while tasting the flavours of their delicious creations.

You will be fascinated by the round table that serves the Diva Menu. Imagine creative and crazy animated projections like fish putting their heads out from your dish, flying pigs, rocket cows and so on. The theme of the projection is different with every dish.

Beautiful details of decoration are everywhere. Hesperides’ Garden represents goddesses in the trees.

The Submarine Bar – where you can enjoy drinks feeling as a mermaid.

Under the Sea kitchen at the market space, where they serve seafood specialties.

On the left: Suquet from Calella de Palafrugell Servet in a cute mini ceramic pot. On the right: a Veal fricandó, a delicious dish from Girona.

Their cheesecake is just a piece of heaven you will love. Its creamy taste will melt in your mouth.
