Taunggyi Balloon Festival

Nay Pyi Daw, Myanmar
5 Nov - 11 Nov 2019

"The Balloon Festival in Taunggyi is a colourful and exciting spectacle that allows one to immerse in the culture of Myanmar and get acquainted with its traditions and history." - Rove.me

Oversized paper lanterns decorated with candles flying in the sky, topped with thunderous fireworks? No biggie, just another year where the Burmese would celebrate the Tazaungmone full moon. This week-long Taunggyi Fire Balloon Festival, while potentially dangerous for obvious reasons, is an annual celebration that marks the end of the rainy season. The candles on these huge paper lanterns usually make up a small picture, feature some sort of Burmese script or just serve as a pretty design. But the real kicker are the pyrotechnics that are usually rigged onto the lanterns, which will go off once the lanterns reach a certain height. You can watch these unusual works of art take flight from a safe distance, but the more daring ones will probably want to get into the thick of things (read: full immersion) at the balloon launching area.
