Looking up to the Guan Yu Shrine is a tall order for everyone

Built more than 150 years ago by Chinese immigrants, Guan Yu Samui Shrine is a notable historical and religious attraction on the island. 

 

The majestic shrine is 16 metres tall, and exudes an air of power and might. It is also often used as a venue for wedding ceremonies, as Guan Yu symbolises honesty and loyalty in a marriage. 

 

Located in Hua Thanon, on the famous Ring Road of Samui, the shrine is also not far from Hin Ta and Hin Ya, so if you're planning on visiting it, you can kill two birds with one stone! 

 

Known as the god of honour, loyalty, integrity, justice, many flock to the temple to pay respects to Guan Yu. Taoists also believe he is a guardian deity. 

 

When you reach the top of the temple, follow the directions to the original shrine, and take note of the instructions that tells you where to stand and how many incense sticks to place.

 

When you enter the inner shrine, do take the time to admire the intricately designed interiors, golden murals and hanging lanterns. As expected of places steeped in Chinese culture, the entire temple is ornate and elegant.
