Every time, I visit Phuket and want to have local food on a budget, I go to Lock Tien Food Centre in Phuket’s Old Town. It is easy to find and is truly an oasis of local food for everyone.
The atmosphere is similar to that of hawker centres in Singapore, as many food stations sell different local dishes. You just buy what you want and seat yourself at available tables. The food price is really tempting. For example, at 40-50 THB (about 1.50 USD), you can get a great dish of your choice.
I would recommend you to try ‘Popiah Sod’ (Fresh Spring Rolls) which is a common dish for locals. ‘Lo Bah’ is also a must-try. It is deep-fried internal pig organs. They first make it a stew and then fry it. Sometimes, it has pork meat in addition to different internal organs. They serve Lo Bah with a special dipping sauce that is spicy, sweet, and sour.
‘Oh Aew’ is a unique local dessert found in Phuket that features a white jelly made from banana mixed with some Chinese herbs. Sometimes, they also mix in some ‘Chao Guay’ (Black Jelly) and red beans.
Tip: Go with lots of friends so you can enjoy more food. After that, walk to Rommanee Road to hang out at a café!
