If you are looking for a fascinating Peranakan-style accommodation with an even more interesting history in Ipoh, look no further than the Sarang Paloh Heritage Stay.
It sits in the old part of Ipoh, particularly in some of the oldest buildings in the town that once housed the first Chinese bank in Perak and a century-old pawnshop.
The structures were eventually restored to their former glory, with the recycled timber and roof tiles sourced from the surrounding area and preloved antique furniture donated by the locals. This boutique hotel gives guests a foretaste of what it's like to live in the past.
Moreover, the rooms here are surprisingly spacious despite being a boutique hotel. I find the original timber flooring more comfortable to walk on.
Additionally, the small details such as the traditional-style tea set in the room made my stay extra homey.
A plethora of cafes and local eateries surround the Sarang Paloh Heritage Stay. To satisfy my growling tummy, I did not have to wander too far for a tasty yet affordable meal. Popular attractions such as the Funtasy House Trick Art, Panglima Kinta Mosque, and Concubine Lane are also within close proximity.
Pro tips: Book the Green Magpie Room overlooking a garden for a quieter stay. They also allow early check-in when the rooms are not fully-booked, so do ask the receptionist upon arrival.
