Fort Funston is certainly a dog’s paradise as they are allowed off-leash here, but there is plenty for humans to do, too. While it once housed military weaponry, Fort Funston has been transformed into a beautiful park, comprising a rocky cliff overlooking the ocean and a sandy beach below.
Visitors and locals alike come here to hike, hang glide, ride on horses, or walk along the beach. I recommend starting at the visitor’s parking lot and walking along the paved paths to get the best views of the ocean. Then take the big sandy staircase down to end up at the beach. Go barefoot and feel the sand between your toes for a true California beach experience.
San Francisco’s unique climate generally means October and November are seasonably warm – which makes it the best time to venture out to Fort Funston. Visit between spring and summer, and you may cross paths with a sleeping seal on the beach, or even catch a glimpse of migrating whales from May to November.
In the meantime, say hello to the dogs that will probably be happily trotting past as you soak in the gorgeous ocean views.
Descend down a set of sandy stairs from the top of Fort Funston to access the beach.
Take a leisurely walk along the trails atop the cliff.
Walk barefoot along the beach and enjoy the salty ocean air.
Sandy trails and pathways lead you down to the beach, but save some energy to climb back up!
