If you’ve been thinking of taking a family holiday and wondering where in the world you should go, the Maldives is one destination you shouldn’t overlook.

Although it’s famous for being a luxury honeymoon destination, these days the Maldives is also a great place for families with kids as more resorts now cater to kids of all ages and will ensure that your getaway with the whole family will be as hassle-free and enjoyable as possible.

With this in mind, here are just a few of the reasons the Maldives is the perfect family playground.

1. Gorgeous natural environment

The Maldives has unrivalled natural beauty and rich marine biodiversity, so if you want to do something completely different with the whole family, it’s bound to be a crowd-pleaser.

Aside from enjoying some of the world’s best beaches complete with white sands, clear blue waters and swaying palm trees, you can drink coconut water straight from fresh coconuts, swim and snorkel next to amazing coral reefs and view the hundreds of species of tropical fish, or even head out on a boat for some dolphin watching.

2. Island hopping

The Maldives is a tropical archipelago and consists of over 1000 islands, of which only 200 are actually inhabited. This means there’s plenty to be discovered, and kids will love the idea of hopping on a boat and exploring a deserted island with unspoiled beaches and plenty of space to roam.

Most resorts offer private boat tours and will be more than happy to take you and your family out to explore nearby islands, enjoy a picnic or even do some fishing.

3. Delicious food

Kids are notoriously picky eaters, but a premium holiday in the Maldives means even the most finicky eaters will face no shortage of delicious options and any resort will have a kid-friendly menu.

For adults, there will be all the freshly grilled or barbecued seafood and fresh salads and fruit platters you’d expect from a tropical paradise, but the local food is also worth a try and includes delicacies like coconut curries, fish soups and fish cakes.

4. Family-friendly resorts

Most resorts in the Maldives that cater to families will have kids corners run by trained staff who organise activities and outings exclusively for children, which is lots of fun for kids but also gives parents some much-needed time alone to relax and recharge.

Children’s programs may include everything from painting classes, junior cooking classes, organised treasure hunts, game nights, surf lessons and many others.

5. Fun activities and excursions

Although the Maldives is certainly a great place to unwind and relax, it’s anything but boring and there are plenty of exciting activities and excursions you can tackle as a family.

Aside from the usual beach holiday activities like building sand castles and swimming, you can take the kids on boat tours and kayaking trips, organise snorkelling adventures and take surfing lessons or even learn to cook as a family.

6. Amazing marine life

As beautiful as the islands of the Maldives are, there is so much more to see below the surface. The coral reefs surrounding the islands are home to more than 1000 species of tropical fish, and it’s also known as one of the top five places in the world to spot dolphins and whales.

You’ll also be able to see exotic marine life like manta rays, moray eels and sea turtles, and a snorkel trip can be a great opportunity to teach kids about the importance of conserving the environment and protecting endangered species.

7. No Stress

Family holidays can sometimes be a bit stressful, with each person having his or her own ideas about what the holiday should entail. Fortunately, the family-friendly resorts in the Maldives are set up in such a way that both parents and children can enjoy the surroundings on their own terms. So leave your worries at home and enjoy a stress-free family holiday at the best turquoise playground.
