Bonfire Night

London, United Kingdom
5 Nov 2019

"It is an incredible night to remember - one of the biggest bonfires in the South West is ignited on the banks of the River Otter and behind it are the flashing neon's of the annual fun fair." - Visit South Devon

"Remember, remember, the fifth of November, the Gunpowder Treason and Plot." Surely this adapted rhyme set to Tchaikovsky's explosive "1812 Overture" from V for Vendetta rings a bell. While the film is loosely based on historical events, Bonfire Night is a very real, very unique British festival that's deeply rooted in history and tradition. It may not be recognised as an official UK National Holiday, but Bonfire Night is marked by magnificent public and private fireworks displays and huge public bonfires across the UK. One of the best places to experience and celebrate this spectacular, albeit ironic festival is in the Devon town of Ottery St. Mary. Here, witness daring men, women and children of all ages crowd the streets by carrying flaming tar barrels on their head, as they build up to a giant bonfire at midnight. There's also a fair you can check out and fireworks to behold after.
