Kushiro Washo Ichiba Market was originally a market for locals and their businesses, but these days more and more tourists love coming here! There are about 50 stores in the market and lunchtime can be crowded, so be sure to get here early!

This is one of a handful of markets in Japan that is still unchanged and maintain their unique local charm. Here you can try a Kushiro original: Katte-don. Literally meaning “your pick rice bowl”. I love seafood, but my husband isn’t a huge fan. The great thing about this dish is you choose what YOU want. His is full of salmon roe, sea-urchin and local tuna.
A warning though. Locals can be a little intimidated by tourists. Even Japanese tourists.

It’s a great place to take photos, but just remember that this is a place of business, so do be respectful when doing so. If you just want to take a picture, ask first.

Choose your favourite toppings and put together a katte-don, a seafood rice bowl!

So many selections, so difficult to choose!

For the fickle ones, visit the restaurants located in the market for ready-made selections.

The sushi is also delicious!
