If the walls could talk, imagine the stories the Belakang Kong Heng by DreamScape hotel would tell. The hotel occupies a historic building that used to be home for actors of the theatre next door, in the 1950s.

Today, it has been transformed into an industrial-chic space, amalgamating old and new touches, as seen from the exposed beams, bare concrete walls, high loft ceilings, and black metal-framed windows.

I stayed in the Duplex Suite, a stylishly appointed and spacious double-storey room, featuring two comfortable single beds and a queen bed, that could easily fit four guests. The charming ensuite bathroom is equipped with a rustic brass water tap. I have truly never encountered another boutique hotel in Ipoh that is more attuned to the industrial theme than Belakang Kong Heng.

The rooms here are undoubtedly cosy but if you feel like lounging around, outside your personal abode, there is also a fun, albeit small infinity pool overlooking the old town.

On top of these, the hotel stands out for its prime location where guests will be spoilt for choices on things to do. I love that I could walk to the nearby 24-hour convenience stores to satisfy my random food cravings, or even get a USB cable that I carelessly forgot to pack.

Hunting for delicious local food is easy as the area is full of top-rated eateries such as the Plan B cafe and the Kedai Kopi Kong Heng coffee shop. Make sure to drop by BookXcess Kong Heng and Yasmin at Kong Heng Newseum located next door too!

Pro tip: Book a Deluxe King Family Room for the best view of the town.
