Most of the hotels in Auckland belong to the bigger chains, but if you really wanted a boutique hotel experience, I think Hotel DeBrett would be your best bet.
It’s a family-owned hotel, and you get a sense of that once you step in and see the unique striped carpet, which was inspired by the owner’s mum – who apparently loves knitting with scraps of wool in every conceivable colour!
If you’re there with friends or a partner, I think you’ll love the little bar that's the perfect place to relax after a day out – it features a host of kitschy Kiwi collectibles that makes you feel right at home. And if you’re heading out, the hotel is just a minute’s walk from Queen Street, where all the boutiques are, and not too far from the bars and restaurants, too.
Although it is a small establishment with only 25 rooms, they’ve managed to fit in family-friendly rooms. We stayed in one of their duplex O’Connell suites, which had sofa beds for the kids and an extra bathroom – which is really a godsend when you’re trying to get everyone ready and out of the room in the morning!
